The most recommended are firmer apples because they don't fall apart into mush during baking. I used a mix of Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. If you are using softer apples, cut down the baking time by 1/3.

Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp - sweet, cinnamon-spiced apple filling with crunchy brown sugar and oat topping. This crisp is best served with caramel ice cream!

Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp

chopped or sliced apples Granny Smith or Golden Delicious

lemon juice

cornstarch

granulated sugar

ground cinnamon

all-purpose flour

old-fashioned oats

packed brown sugar

ground cloves

unsalted butter melted and cooled

Butter a 2qt or 8" square or round baking dish.

In a large mixing bowl, combine apple slices with lemon juice. Toss gently.

Add granulated sugar and cinnamon and stir in.

In the same large bowl, whisk oats and flour.

Add brown sugar, cinnamon and cloves and stir in.

Melt butter in microwave. Let it sit in room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes to cool. It will not solidify.

Pour butter over oats topping. Mix with a fork.

Sprinkle topping in crumbles over apple filling.

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for 10 to 15 minutes more.
