  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp 1/4-1/2 teaspoon ground chipotle chile, or cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • 1 (28 ounce) can 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
  • 3 eaches medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 (15 ounce) can 1 15-ounce can dark red kidney beans, rinsed
  • 1 (15 ounce) can 1 15-ounce can small white beans, such as navy beans, rinsed
  • 1 (15 ounce) can 1 15-ounce can black beans, rinsed
  • 3 c water
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground pepper
